HEALTHY LIVING

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE HAVE REGULAR CHECK UPS
It is always a good idea to have your blood pressure checked along with your height and weight. High blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease or stroke but the good news is that it can be reduced fairly easily, so it makes perfect sense to go along and have regular check ups.

DIET

Eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and a diet low in animal fat can have a major impact on your health. It can help protect you against cancers, heart disease and stroke. Fresh fruit and vegetables are great, but frozen and tinned also count towards your daily allowance, as do beans and pulses.

EXERCISE

Taking regular exercise has more benefits than you might think. It can help you avoid heart disease, cancer, fragile bones, high blood pressure and obesity. Exercise can also improve our mental health, raising self-esteem and reducing mild to moderate depression. The good news is, you do not have to be a fitness fanatic to benefit from exercise - activities such as regular walking and gardening will really help keep you healthy.

SMOKING

Half of all smokers die prematurely because of their addiction. Smoking causes a range of cancers, heart disease, respiratory disease and a whole range of other serious health problems. Quitting smoking will bring immediate as well as long-term benefits to your health. It will also give you extra cash in your pocket!

ALCOHOL

Most people drink alcohol, and most do so without any problems. We all know that a drink can sometimes help us to unwind or to relax with friends. Drinking in moderation is unlikely to lead to problems, but heavy drinking, getting drunk, or drinking at the wrong time or in the wrong place can lead to a whole range of difficulties, not just liver damage.

For men - if you regularly drink four or more units a day there is an increasing risk to your health. For women - If you regularly drink three or more units a day there is an increasing risk to your health. A unit of alcohol is a UK's pub measure of spirits or wine or half a pint of beer, lager, or cider.

ACCIDENTS
Most accidents happen in the home, but there are simple things we can do to prevent them. For example, keeping stairs well lit and clear of clutter, and checking that rugs and carpets are not loose. Be aware of the dangers to children in the kitchen especially cookers and sharp knives. Do not store medicines or homeopathic remedies, alcohol or toxic substances anywhere that a child might find them.

STRESS
Reducing stress levels can seriously improve your health. Not only does reducing stress to tolerable levels lead to a more consistent or greater sense of well-being, it also reduces the likelihood of some physical illnesses. The first step is to learn to recognise the different stresses in your life. Learning simple relaxation techniques and building them into your daily routine can help relieve stress, tension, and high blood pressure, and can help you if you are trying to quit smoking.

SAFETY IN THE SUN
Skin cancer is the second most common form of cancer in the UK and while most types are completely curable some can be fatal. Deaths from skin cancer have been rising sharply over the last 30yrs, reflecting our increase in sunbathing, particularly in hotter countries abroad. Avoiding direct exposure to sunlight is the best way to prevent problems. But if you do decide to sunbathe remember this:
Seek the shade - especially between 11am and 3pm when the sun is hottest.
Hats on - protect yourself by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and loose fitting but tightl--woven clothing.
Apply sunscreen - use plenty of high protection sunscreen, topping up regularly.
Do not burn - it will not protect you and it will not improve your tan.
Exercise care - always keep babies and young people out of the sun.
Remember - if you notice any changes in the moles on your skin, consult your homeopathic practitioner, doctor straight away.

SCREENING
One in twelve women in the UK develop breast cancer at some time in their lives and it is much more common in women over fifty. All women between the age of fifty and sixty-four are routinely invited to attend for free breast screening every three years in the UK at a NHS screening service. Screening is important because it can help find small changes in the breast before there are any other signs or symptoms. Breast screening (mammography) is an x-ray examination of the breasts. Cervical screening is also very important as changes in the cervix (neck of the womb) may be identified and can usually be treated to prevent cancer developing. Women between twenty and sixty -four are routinely invited every three years in the UK to have a smear taken at their doctor's surgery or at a local clinic. Older women may request to be screened, but are not as yet routinely invited. Always be sure that your doctor has your correct name and address so that you receive these screening invitations. For women, a top tip is to go along and have cervical smears and breast screening.

SEXUAL HEALTH
Sexual health is an important part of general health, taking care of your sexual health could make life less stressful and more enjoyable. Safer sex and using condoms has been an issue for sexually active people for quite a few years now, but the message about how to avoid HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases is not being received as well as it should. More and more people are becoming HIV positive, not just gay men and intravenous drug users, so wearing condoms and practising SAFER SEX is something everyone should be reminded of.

INFLUENZA
The term "flu" is used very loosely these days and can mean anything from a slightly raised temperature with a bit of a sniffle to full blown influenza. True influenza is a very nasty illness and is particularly worrying for people with low immune systems or a history of asthma or bronchial problems. Those people who are affected know that a bad bout of influenza early in winter can leave them with health problems for months. Even people who consider themselves very healthy can feel very low and lacking in energy long after the acute symptoms of influenza have subsided.

From my clinical experience I believe that influenza's and colds are not specific illnesses with single causes, but individual responses to a combination or variety of causes. Faced with a certain set of circumstances one person will develop symptoms whereas another person will not. Homeopathic treatment enhances resistance to infection. Patients undergoing homeopathic treatment often notice that they get far fewer colds, sniffles and flu's because their general level of health has been improved. Homeopathic remedies have been used for many years to diminish or even avert influenza and cold symptoms. A susceptibility to one cold after another needs careful investigation and appropriate treatment
